In November of 2000, Mark Eyking, a resident of Millville, N.S., was first elected Member of Parliament for the Federal Riding of Sydney-Victoria.
Mark has served on various committees including the International Trade Commission, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Agricultural Task Force, and the Agricultural Committee.
Prior to entering politics, Mark, along with his wife Pam, operated a successful vegetable farm for several years. They were recipients of the Cape Breton Business Excellence Award and Outstanding Young Farmers of Nova Scotia Award. Mark also worked on international agricultural projects, implementing sustainable farming practices in impoverished countries
In 2003 Mark was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and became a member of the Privy Council
Mark is dedicated to Cape Breton and his riding. He believes that government should provide the tools to allow the people of Cape Breton to prosper.
Mark effectively helped secure $400 million in federal; provincial funding to start the Sydney tar ponds and coke oven clean up; and the remediation of old Mine sites.
More recently he successfully lobbied the federal government to help fund the dredging of Sydney Harbour, which has been completed.
In the riding, Mark’s office deals with numerous constituency cases and believes effective representation requires a commitment in Cape Breton and in Ottawa.
In May 2011 Mark won his 5th Election.
Born in 1960, Mark is the fifth of ten children in the family of Dutch Immigrants John and Jean Eyking of Millville.
He is a graduate of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro. Mark and his wife Pam have four children.
