EYKING QUESTIONS THE CONSERVATIVES COMMERCIAL FISHERIES AGENDA

Posted on March 7, 2012

Hon. Mark Eyking, P.C., M.P.

Sydney-Victoria

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Ottawa, ON) Following question period today in the House of Commons Mark Eyking, M.P. for Sydney Victoria & Chair of Atlantic Liberal Caucus feels that the Conservative’s commercial fisheries agenda will have a detrimental effect on fisher families and communities throughout Atlantic Canada.

Fleet Separation/owner-operator policies have been in place for 30 years with the aim to ensure enterprises in the Atlantic inshore and midshore fisheries remain independent and free from outside influence of larger corporations.

“When so many livelihoods are at stake, it is unbelievable that proper consultations did not take place by an industry worth over one billion dollars” said Eyking.

Conservatives have completely reversed the idea of adopting a more inclusive approach to policy making from fisher families and communities, hosting invite-only consultations with corporate fisher’s representatives giving little or no notice to organizations within the Independent Core Sector.

Reps from 33 owner-operator fleets from across Atlantic Canada and Quebec are saying DFO has shown nothing but the utmost contempt for fishermen by launching a top-down, manipulative dictatorial policy approach without giving proper notice.

This is Atlantic Canada’s single largest private sector employer, with over 10,000 individual licences holder plus 20,000 crew members.

“If the Conservatives get away with this secretive agenda, hundreds of communities throughout Atlantic Canada will be changed forever.” Eyking added

Eyking Questions Minister over Job Bank Shutdown

NEWS RELEASE

(OTTAWA, ON) Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking, questioned the Service Canada Minister today on the shutdown of the Job Bank website.

“Mr. Speaker, Canada’s unemployment rate is rising, 135,0000 employers and almost one million employees use the Job Bank website, unfortunately, this site has been out of service for weeks now. This site is a crucial tool, with more Canadians than ever before looking for work. Since this Minister took over Service Canada, EI wait times are longer, old age security is out of reach, student job centres are being shutdown, and now the Job Bank is out of service. Mr. Speaker, will the Job Bank re-open and when?” Eyking asked during Question Period today

“We hear the Minister today assuring us that they are working on it and it will be up and running again in the next couple days but every day the site is down, jobs will be lost. With the growing unemployment rate, this website has become a much needed resource, any sort of delay is unacceptable, it is causing frustrations for many” Eyking said after QP

Eyking recognizes Cape Breton’s Polish Community & St. Mary’s Polish Parish

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA ADVISORY

Ottawa— Today Mark Eyking M.P. for Sydney Victoria recognized Cape Breton’s Polish Community & St. Mary’s Polish Parish in the House of Commons.

Mister Speaker,

Cape Breton has an active and vibrant Polish community. The centre of their community is St. Mary’s Polish Church in Whitney Pier. Over 100 years ago Polish immigrants came to Sydney to work in the new steel plant. They not only worked hard in the plant and raising families, they built a wonderful church and community.

This weekend I was honoured to attend a church service at St. Mary’s. It was a wonderful event highlighting traditional Polish dress and language. After the event the congregation blessed their buses and went on a pilgrimage to St. Ninian’s Cathedral in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. A church service was held at the Cathedral to highlight the Polish community and to showcase the importance of St. Mary’s Church to the Antigonish diocese.

Mister Speaker and colleagues, today I rise in this House to recognize the great contribution that St. Mary’s and the Polish community has given to Cape Breton and also the rest of Canada. May they continue to do so for many years to come.
